Sustainability at the University of Maine


Single Stream Recycling
has come to UMaine!
(also referred to as Zero-Sort)

It’s as easy as 1-2-3!

1.  Find a designated single-stream receptacle

Dining Bin

2. Place empty, accepted materials in the receptacle
                  NO SORTING NECESSARY


Cardboard
cardboard
Cereal Boxes, Pizza Boxes, Paper Towel Cores, Egg Cartons, Beverage Holders

Paperpaper
Newspapers, Junk Mail, Envelopes, Magazines, Soft Cover Books, Brown Bags

Plasticplastic
Containers #1 - #7 (includes milk jugs, bleach, detergent, shampoo bottles,etc)

Glassglass
Bottles and containers (any color)

Metal
metal
Aluminum, tin, steel kitchen cans, aluminum pie plates, trays/foil

Non recycleable items: recyclables containing food waste, plastic cups containing liquid and/or ice , plastic drinking straws, window glass, mirrors and light bulbs, dishes, pyrex, ceramics, foam packaging, styrofoam, pots and pans, VCR tapes, tools, plastic bags, or paint or oils, hazardous materials

3. Let UMaine staff take it from there!

Collected material is transported to a Zero-Sort processing facility in Boston where materials are sorted, baled, and sold on the recyclables commodities market!

It really is that easy!
