Earth Day 2009
Suggestions for a "Greener UMaine"

  • Motion sensitive lights in bathrooms, etc.

  • Low flow toilets, faucets, shower heads

  • New windows in older buildings

  • Energy from methane of compost that school is proposing

  • Coin-operated showers to reduce amount of time people spend in the shower

  • Build York Eco-Village for green student housing

  • Pay students to grow food in greenhouse for commons

  • Grey water treatment in rooftop greenhouses

  • Waterless toilets

  • Edible landscapes, fruit trees, berry bushes, herbs, instead of grass

  • Re-use grey water instead of creating more “sewage” use for gardens

  • Recycling receptacles right next to the trash

  • More advertising for blue bikes

  • Powerstrips in Graduate Student’s Offices

  • Promote recycling more with containers available

  • More veggies from local growers and farmers in cafeteria

  • Replace coverings on greenhouses so they have better insulation (4-layer polycarb not glass)

  • More systems for student carpools

  • A place to rent out green bikes to use for getting around campus and off campus.  Must register the bike so it doesn’t get lost

  • Have composting buckets in dining facilities
